Describe what you read or heard.
In this story, Ruby Pickens Tartt talks about Aunt Amy Chapman. She had died on the Tuesday two weeks before the interview. Tartt said that she has seen her two days before her death and she asked her for a ride home; she said her feet hurt from working in the cotton fields. Tartt found out that working in the fields is what had killed her. She worked for a man, Governor Champman, and slaved on his land. She claimed that he was good to her. When he died, he had a house and a piece of land distribtued to his workers, including Aunt Amy. One of the white overseers, who happened to be the father of Aunt Amy's children, and his wife Mrs. Leman took in two of the children. However, the children had grown up fine and are making their lives worth the while.

What are your impressions?
I think Ruby was close to Aunt Amy and really cared about her. In the beginning, she talked about how Amy asked her for a ride because her feet hurt. Although she questioned her, Ruby still brought her home.

Describe what you read or heard.
Lawrence F. Evans was a hunter who hunted for sea animals with his dogs. He heard that dogs have been used to help capture terrapin, which are small creatures that can live in water or on land and are about the size of a thumb. Lawrence's friend, Ed, would send his findings to Mr. Plush, who would pay Lawrence for what he sold. One day, Ed and Lawrence took a trip down to the marsh with their dogs to hunt terrapin. Instantly, the dogs found the terrapin. Each terrapin was about three pounds. Each pound was fifty cents. However, Lawrence would have to pay for shipping. The terrapin meat would be used in a special soup caleld terrapin soup.

What are your impressions?
I think that Lawrence is fascinated by both his dogs and the terrapin. I think the way the dogs can capture the sly sea critters so easily baffles him. Also, the life of the terrapin, like how they can live without food, amazes him as well. Also, I can tell he is a born hunter and loves it as well.

Johnnie Gates is a truck miner in Helena, Alabama. He doesn't have a very good education, and he doesn't have a very good pay for his job. Johnnie and his wife, Hattie, have two children: 4 year old Joan and 20 year old John Robert. Johnnie wants to be able to put John Robert through college, but his family just doesn't have the money. He attented one year in college, but was pulled out because of his family's lack of money. Johnnie said he doesn't know what they are going to do about Joan, but they're taking things one step at a time. Johnnie had the opportunity to get a better paying job at one point, and he was perfectly suited for it. He had to look for gas leaks and anything that might cause an explosion. He didn't get the job because he failed the test they gave him. Johnnie was quoted saying, "I had to go to Birmingham to stand examination and I couldn't answer a dang question that was on the paper. Another fellow took the test; said he was sure glad he knew triggermomity. What is triggermomity anyhow? Anyway, that dude got the job. And I know as much about gas as anybody."

What are your impressions?
I think Johnnie is a very caring person. He wants the best for his family. He wants his children to have the eductaion he never had. He wishes he could give them more, and he's doing all that he can.

Lawrence F. Evans is the man being interviewed. He is a rattlesnake hunter and has trained dogs to help. He is a Caucasian middle aged male who was being interviewed in 1939. When I was reading this interview I felt amazed that there are actually people out there who will go through all the trouble to hunt Terrapins. It was interesting to learn about them, but I felt disgusted when it mentioned how you kill them. The interviewer seemed to be amazed at these Terrapin hunters.
.” From her story of Aunt Chapman I found that she was a caring old lady who had a rather hard life in the beginning. Whenever she would ask favors from others, she’d always find a way to repay them, usually in the form of gifts from her garden. I thought the interview was interesting to read and it was nice to see that this woman had such happy memories of her aunt when she was alive.
